The internet community can be a powerful thing — here at 99designs we know that better than anyone. Being part of the online design community is particularly lucrative. It’s a great way to find work, meet clients, learn more about design and even help get your design dreams up and running.

That’s where crowdfunding comes in. This is when a website takes the power of crowdsourcing to help artistic entrepreneurs raise finances for their dream projects. The artist sets a goal for the amount of money that they need to make their project happen, and then creates a presentation showing off what they want to do. Anyone who runs across their project on the site can donate money to the cause so the artist can bring their project to life!

Here are some design projects sourced from one of the most popular crowdfunding sites out there, Kickstarter. These projects were funded by the online community and are now available.

The Montserrat Typeface

Graphic designer and typography enthusiast Julieta Ulanovsky was inspired by the signage from the early 20th century that she found all over her home city of Buenos Aires. In an effort to save the history of these beautiful and historical typfaces, she used Kickstarter to start her own open-source font series called Montserrat, now available on Google Fonts. Check out the original project here.

Crypteks USB

The Cryptechs USB is a great device for safely and securely backing up and transporting all of your digital information, including your designs. It’s a USB drive locked in an encrypted metal case (with 14,348,907 possible passcodes!) Yes, it may be a little over the top but it’s so cool and well designed that we couldn’t help but find it inspiring. See the original project here.

Designer Founders

This book is all about designers who took their craft to the next level, and created a business out of it that has somehow had a socially positive impact on the world. Featuring inspiring interviews with more that 35 of the most successful designer/entrepreneurs out there, this book really examines what it takes to make your creative ideas a success. Muti-Touch Keyboard and Mouse

Engineer Jason Giddings recently ran a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign for his Multi-Touch Keyboard and Mouse – a beautifully designed wireless keyboard and mouse made out of tempered glass and metal. The first prototypes are expected to come out around May. Such a cool project! We’re excited to see how it turns out. There’s no website for it yet but you can see the project here.

Paper Punk

Imagined by Readymade co-creator Grace Hawthorne, Paper Punk is a creative and customizable system of building blocks created to let the user build and create their own toys. There’s a robot, a car, a dog and, coming in fall 2012, a whole new line of toys (including a cat)! Perfect for our inner geek. See the original project here.
