stephenaellis got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Artwork that invokes living in a world that severely restricts life saving interventions.

UNnatural Selection (Moral Decay)
The book is written using my "nom de plume" pen name. This is my first book, written mainly for pleasure, and the first in a series. I'm a retired technologist, having worked for over 30 years in banking technology infrastructure.
Set in the year 2040, the United Nations acting on behalf of World Governments enacts a law dubbed "natural selection", although many refer to it as UNnatural Selection, given the United Nationals involvement, and a play on words. The actual law is called Life Preservation Assistance Suspension (LPAS), and severely limits any form of life-saving intervention using: technology, surgery, drugs. A global law driven by a need to control the human population, which has become untenable, and is depleting the earth of its natural life sustaining resources. The belief being this will eventually lead to human extinction, caused by countries going to war to control the earth' resources leading to a global nuclear war. An illegal group named POLO starts up to save lives against the new rule of law. (I am happy to further expand this if it helps with design).
It is young and older adult fiction. I expect the audience to be mid to late teens upwards, of all genders.
Book cover type
On this point, I am open. I do not consider myself very arty, and the subject of the book (for me at least), isn't an easy subject to put into picture form. So I am very open to the creativity of the designers and am happy to field questions. As a guide. Imagine living in a world where everyday life-preserving/saving, interventions are severely restricted. With few people saved after an accident, or given antibiotics or vaccinations. Or placed on dialysis or life-support machines. All manner of life-prolonging/saving technology, drugs and operations severely limited to bring down the number of humans on the planet. Then add to the mix an organisation started by a surgeon that operates in the shadows to save lives illegally, risking imprisonment for all those involved, in the pursuit of fighting a law they consider inhumane.
What to avoid
I'm very open to ideas and hope this can be narrowed down as suggestions are put forward.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
stephenaellis collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected 3 winners!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
