Prism: Shedding Light on Life with Duchenne
David is a 30 year old male with a physical disability. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 2013, and again with an MSW in 2015. His writing style is casual, down to earth, but also well-organized.
Prism is a memoir about my life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (a progressive disease that first shows symptoms around ages 6or 7. typically results in wheelchair use, loss of motor functions, and ventilation.) It details my childhood and youth, and adapting to my changing physical abilities. The primary focus is on my time in college, living in a uniquely adaptive residence program that allowed people with severe disabilities to live away from home on campus, and have a relatively "normal" college experience. It is not entirely somber and serious, or inspirational, like most memoirs about living with diseases. It balances the serious parts with an equal amount of humor and lightheartedness.
anyone age 18+, not location or gender specific. it was written with people without disabilities/no prior knowlege of Duchenne in mind. Anyone that wants to learn about a unique or different life experience/learn about what it's like to have or live with a disability/learn about Duchenne would be the target audience. Though it is not exclusive to this group. People already familiar with disabilities/ Duchenne would also get something out of it
