What I Couldn't Leave Behind Subtitle is: MY CAREER AS A COP
Neil is a retired police officer with the City of Des Plaines, Illinois, USA. He started that job at age 22 in 1978, witnessed traumatic incidents during that time, and dealt with stress that continued long after he retired. His short stories have been featured in local publications and he has taught a memoir writing class through a local library.
This is my first memoir and it covers my career as a suburban Chicago police officer as well as the years since I retired while dealing with the effect the job had on me.
Adults. I think it would be a local interest book for those who live in the city I worked for, plus a good book for anyone thinking of becoming a police officer, their significant others or their parents. It deals with the emotional impact of calls I went on, not just blood and guts. I'd like a cover that would appeal to men and women.
Book cover type
Professionally done photo of gun and holster/gun belt included for possible cover shot. I love, love, love that photo. Photo of author standing by police car included for back cover. If you crop it be sure to leave the name of the police department as shown on the door. Photo of Commander badge is provided, however if used on front cover, be sure department name (Des Plaines) or at least the "Plaines" is not showing. Two pictures of my nametag are provided, one against a white background and one against our navy blue uniform shirt material. I thought it would be great to use one of the nametag shots as my author name of the front cover. This book will be sold through Amazon as a physical book that is 6"x9" and is 253 pages. The lights on our squad cars varied in style over the years and the latest version can be seen on the back cover picture. They have always been red and blue. I like realistic book covers that are photography based.
What to avoid
I'm willing to pay for some stock imagery if it yields a great design, but I don't want to go overboard with it.
