Art & Design
I'm a Fantasy/Sci-Fi author catering to audiences similar to that of David Eddings and Raymond Feist.
What's your vision?
I’d like a print and ebook cover for my book “Artifice: Episode One”. It is a Fantasy novel with a hint of Sci-fi in it as well. This is an ongoing series (with book #4 due in just over a month), and I would like to use this contest to establish a working relationship with a talented graphic artist for my other books as well. I’d like to replace the existing [homemade] cover for the book, which can be seen at http://www.amazon.com/Artifice-Episode-One-ebook/dp/B00AJ18RQ4/ or below in the attached images. This will be a relaunch of the book and will be retitled: “Strange New World Artifice: Episode One” Feel free to format it however you feel is aesthetically pleasing. The author name is “K. P. Alexander”. I’m completely open to any suggested designs for the artwork. My only stipulation is no photos, only artwork. I believe the resolution on the ebook cover needs to be minimum 1563x2500 pixels for Amazon. The back cover for the printed version needs to have a blank space for the ISBN number, which I’ll insert afterwards. The print cover will be 5x8 inches with a spine width of half an inch. Also, because the back cover description is in a state of flux right now, I would like the Photoshop files, as well as the standard picture files, in the likely event that I have to make changes to the wording. Here is the description from the back of the book: “Rolling off his couch after a rough night, the day started off quite normal for John. Discovering a portal to another world in his coat closet, however, was definitely out of the ordinary. A sane person would have run screaming for the hills the very moment they even suspected that a dragon was on the other side of said portal. Good thing John was still a bit hung over. Realizing that the dragon didn’t actually mean him any harm, John decided that a change of scenery was in order, and opted for a vacation to the exotic city of Iathera. Befriending an enigmatic green-skinned woman and a wizard with a penchant for bathrobes, his impromptu holiday is cut short by news of an unprovoked attack on an allied nation. Having trekked across an entire ocean to wage war, the nation of Kierd had laid siege to the Nebar Cluster for reasons unknown. With Kierd wielding devastating weapons never before seen in that world, the surrounding region is rapidly thrown into unrest. Still not exactly sure if there was a reason that he was brought here, he finds that his unique insights into this strange new world could be the key into tipping the conflict back in the Cluster’s favour.” Here are a few elements from the book that could be used as inspiration, or depicted in the cover art: Characters: A. John: The main character as described above. Accompanied by two dogs on his journey – large golden retriever types. B. Venarya: “Green-skinned woman” as described above. Very light green skin. Also has bright green hair. Beautiful. Wears long white dresses. Basically, this world’s version of an elf. C. Rheus: Scientist/Wizard who likes wearing bathrobes. Long beard. Looks only about 40 years old though. D. Mag: the “Dragon”. Not large – just over 8 feet tall. Dark black with a hint of dark purple. Has scales. Dark blue reptilian (slitted) eyes. Head is similar to a crocodile with a long neck. E. Rizikh: member of the “Syrilo” race. Looks like large praying mantis but with humanlike hands instead of the “blade” appendage. Has large multi-coloured wings draped around him which looks like a cloak. He is a merchant selling crystal jewellery from a tent in a large bazaar. (He is really a minor character in this book, but his appearance is striking enough that you may wish to use him.) F. Various “good” sea captains. Black uniform. Ships are wooden with metal plating over the hull. No masts, as ships use engines. Ships range from 80 feet scouts to large 500 foot battleships. Weapons are not gunpowder-based. All catapult and ballistas, etc. Scenes: A. John goes to get his coat and finds a portal to another world in the back of the coat closet. Mag (dragon) and Rheus (wizard) are on the other side, and John has two dogs (large golden retrievers) with him. John is also in a wooden cabin. B. John, Venarya (green lady) and Rheus are walking through a bazaar filled with multi-coloured tents and vendors selling all manner of stuff. C. Naval Battle #1: A fleet of 200 various Nebar Cluster ships (no gunpowder weapons) intercept a ragtag fleet of refugee ships, who are being pursued by another naval fleet of four hundred enemy ships, all of them around 150 feet long. The enemy ships are all wooden with no metal. There are no seams on the enemy ships, as they are “grown” and not constructed, and can look partially organic if you wish. The refugee ships take up position among the friendly fleet for protection, and as the enemy fleet gets closer, many of the refugee ships explode, destroying over 150 friendly ships. On top of that, the enemy ships turned out to be equipped with explosive weapons (deployed via ballista or catapult, not via cannon), which have never been seen in that world before. Several friendly ships are destroyed before the Cluster fleet retreats home. Takes place just after dawn. D. Naval Battle #2: (This one is more of a blockade run, than an actual naval battle) The Nebar Cluster is a group of four large islands which are extremely close together, and the entire area is ringed by hundreds of small islets which form a perimeter. The islets also have defense turrets (equipped with energy weapons which shoot globes or orange energy out) at regular intervals. The enemy ships have blockaded the Cluster, but a small fleet of 30 ships manage to run the blockade by using a decoy squadron on the other side of the islands to draw the enemy ships away. Takes place at night. E. Note that the current cover art depicts a “sun” that shines at night. It gives off very little light – perhaps just a little bit more than a full moon. It also has those constantly swirling and shifting ribbons and flares of light coming off it.
[EDIT] Just some additional info: Many of you want to do a cover based on the main town itself, which is fine. So, here's a quick note on the cityscape of the main town: - a large seaside town, roughly circular and about 16 miles in diameter - landscape is mainly flat with a few tiny hills - buildings are not large, with the largest ones being about three storeys high - "university/school" in the centre of the town with about a dozen large buildings around 80 feet high. Think dark grey "borg cube"-style brick buildings, but you really don't need to depict those, as a seaside shot should be fine as well. - There are blue palm trees which glow at night to provide street lighting. *** 1. I have extended the qualifying round by four more days. 2. Sketches/mockups are perfectly fine. 3. A little more info on the star system: a. There are two "suns" a fair distance apart. One sun looks like ours, and the other looks like the one on the current cover. They shine at day and night respectively. More info on that in the next sections. b. There is a large red gas-giant type planet at the half-point between the two suns. c. There is a "moon" orbiting the gas giant. This moon is the world where all of this takes place. d. Currently, the moon's position in orbit is like this: [SUN]--------------[GASGIANT]-------------[NIGHTSUN] ----------------------------| -----------------------[MOON] So, as the moon revolves on its own axis (clockwise), it gets light from either sun to form a day/night cycle. Obviously, the moon's position around the gas giant changes, but not during the current book. Also, remember this "moon" is a lush planet just like earth. e. So, during certain periods of day/night, the large red gas giant will be visible in the sky, and will also appear to "rise" and "set". To clarify, first the normal sun will rise, then the gas giant will rise, and then the "nightsun" as the regular sun starts to set. Let me know if any more details are needed, as this is probably difficult to visualize. 4. The main character is just supposed to be an ordinary "everyman". Darkish hair colour is okay, but you can just depict any images of him with his back facing the reader. His clothes can be just a "normal/casual" pair of slacks and shirt - nothing medieval or period-based. *** Just a quick reminder that the title "Strange New World" should be readable from the thumbnail. Most readers browse Amazon just using thumbnails, and a non-visible title really turns them off. Ideally, I'd like the author name as well to be visible, but that's not as important. "Artifice Episode One" doesn't necessary have to be visible from the thumbnail. *** Just to let everyone know - while I'm not adverse to a design with just a logo of single picture on it (and there are a few good ones so far), I would prefer a landscape or scene setting. Doesn't even have to be one of the actual scenes that I've mentioned. If you've thought of something you'd like to try based on the brief/notes, but you also want to know more specifics before you fully commit to it, please feel free to send me a message.
