We need a book cover for a memoir. The book is called Remain Free (http://www.remainfree.com) and is about a teenager's friendship with Troy Davis, a death row inmate executed in 2011 despite serious evidence of innocence.
I encourage all prospective designers to visit http://www.remainfree.com to understand the premise of the book, and then design something with that in mind. Specifically, reading the short previews of the book (http://www.remainfree.com/preview) will help you understand the tone of the book, which the cover should reflect.
- Contain the name of the book ("Remain Free"), and the name of the author, "Gautam Narula". It is recommended, but not required, to put the subtext "A Memoir" in the design.
- Design that reflects one or more of the themes or ideas in the book: death penalty, coming of age, friendship, activism, social justice, loss of loved ones, justice system, etc.
- Final design should be provided in two sizes: 6" x 9" and 5.5" x 8.5"
- Final design should include a back cover that appropriately fits in with the design. We may change the text, so keep the amount/type of text flexible.
Included are the image we are currently using, the website banner based on that image, and an image of Troy Davis which we have acquired the rights to use. They are provided for reference, but there is no requirement to use any elements of either of them.
Although the book contains tragedy (the execution of the young narrator's close friend and the implication of his innocence), the most important thing is that the design show the hopeful, more optimistic themes that are conveyed within the book. Essentially, a cautious optimism despite the obvious tragedy. This, above all else, is the key to this design.
