In a Sweet Magnolia Time
Robert Wintner has authored 15 novels, 3 memoirs, 3 story collections and 5 reef photo books.
In a Sweet Magnolia Time covers those close to the federal judge who was first in U.S. history to rule that separate but equal is not equal. The cross-grain drama is in the judge’s steamy divorce and remarriage to a Yankee spitfire. The local (Charleston, South Carolina) society revolted. The historical ruling was viewed as revenge and not as a heartfelt, liberal position. The narrator reflects the Old South, passing through its fading Newness to its tenuous present. The narrator, Arthur Covingdale, burned a cross at the judge’s house and threw a brick through a window. The story opens on the judge's funeral, with contrition, and moves directly south to the barrier sea islands, as Covingdale gives a ride home to Jim Cohen, an old, black man. Covingdale sinks from there in a most embarrassing truth, and sinks further when Jim Cohen's niece arrives from Guadeloupe.
Intelligent adults who favor strong narrative and colorful subject matter.
