I am a novelist who writes military historical fiction, primarily naval fiction.
What's your vision?
A book cover. A full design brief and supporting materials is enclosed in the zip file attached. Those who do well in this contest will be best served by spending a few minutes and reading the brief.
Get creative. Blow me away. Remember, this book is a dark, personal story. It’s about the anguish, guilt, trauma experienced by one man (O’Toole) who is responsible for leading many other men into battle and ultimately their death. This book is not about the boat, the war, or even the Pacific. Those are merely historical elements that place O’Toole in WWII. It’s critical to be historically accurate when using imagery but remember that the story, and therefore cover, are about the O’Toole and his internal struggle. This struggle is how the book demonstrates the hell of war. I want the cover to make me feel this man’s anguish, guilt, and trauma after a hellish battle (he is wounded and his uniform has been torn to shreds) as he views the body bags (they used mattress covers in the navy in WWII) of three dozen or so his dead crewman. Typography is important and sends a message. The winning design would probably contain typography that is gritty and conveys the anguish of war rather than polished typography or gold, silver or shiny colors. War is not glorious, or shiny.
