On Winter's Eve
I'm an independent author with several works under a different pen name.
Winters in Bern are long and cold and deep. On Winter nights, when the snow is falling, Pippa knows that she’ll wake up to find tracks in front of her farmhouse. The tracks are small, and they come from the woods—those same woods that her mother says are full of witches and elves and trolls, and her father says are full of wolves and bears and demons. But these tracks are the Tompte’s, and he is a friendly creature. Or at least that’s what Pippa hopes. . . He borrows and he mends, he takes and he sometimes leaves, and such is life on a farm at the edge of the realm. Her mother calls it tradition. Her father calls it a curse. And when things start going missing and trouble comes their way, Pippa’s not sure what to believe. This is a story of tradition, of goodness gratitude, and giving.
Children to adults. It's a very mature middle-grade novel meant to be enjoyed by a wide audience. It has aspects of a fantasy world.
Book cover type
This is a story of winter, of giving, and tradition. It is part of a fantasy world that I write in under another pen name, an older world with a high-fantasy setting. The story is about Pippa, a young girl of about eight or nine. She lives on a farm out at the edge of the realm, on the very edge of the woods (think of Scandinavia in the pre-industrial age). Each night her farm is visited by the Tompte (which is my world's interpretation of a Tomte or nisse), and she awakens to find his footprints in the snow. The farmhouse is small, with small windows. They have a barn and fields stretching to the woods. The Tompte lives in a cottage deep in the woods. I want a cover that captures winter. The cold, the dark, the deep. But there is also warmth and tradition. I previously envisioned seeing Pippa approaching the Tomte's cottage deep in the woods, seen from behind with her hood up to hide her, but now I really want to see what people come up with. I've also envisioned seeing her at the window of her farmhouse, with tracks leading from the woods. But again, I'm not the artist. Both of the examples above are more literal/detailed covers, but I also tend to enjoy looking at simple/mininmal covers as well. On this project, I'm open to both. I am more critical when things are more detailed.
What to avoid
I don't particularly like stock images. I'm much more likely to decline designs that include stock. I don't want an up close of Pippa. Hidden behind foggy glass or a thick winter hood is fine. But I'd rather leave her facial features to the reader's imagination.

Wickard was pleasant to work with - they're prompt with replies, accommodating with all my rectifications and suggestions, and most of all produced a book cover practically mirroring my vision for it. I would love to have their help again on another project!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
