Looking for a cover for the print and ebook version of a novel: The Miranda Contract. It's a street level superhero story. Kind of like the Wild Cards series - most of the world is the same as ours, except some people have powers. The characters in this book don't wear costumes though.
Aimed at a teenage to young adult audience.
Design brief is below the synopsis (bare with me!)
They say family is the most important thing, but it's not so great when your grandfather is a supervillain.
For the past five years, Dan has been lying to everyone about just how ordinary he is. Dan's the grandson of The Mad Russian: one of the world's most powerful, and insane, supervillains, and he's an uberhuman, too - a living battery, able to absorb and discharge electricity with his mind. Normally he keeps his powers hidden, but when the old man returns with an offer to make his grandson heir apparent, any chance at an ordinary life is blown apart.
Instead of going along with his grandfather's plan to assassinate American pop sensation Miranda Brody, Dan finds himself desperately trying to keep her alive. And he's never really been desperate about anything before. Forced on to the streets of Melbourne, Dan pulls together parts of his criminal past to get them out of danger, all the while falling for a girl who is intent on blaming him for the whole mess.
Cover: I'm hoping to get a cover which has a bit of style - not necessarily just photomanipulated characters. In fact, I don't think a front-on character cover will work here. But then again, if you've got the magic touch I'd love to see what you can do - just not with models looking directly at the reader!
Some ideas might be to incorporate a silhouette or a stylised cover. I'd love a lightning bolt design in the background or somewhere on the cover.
The story takes place in a city, so a city background might work.
The idea of Miranda as a celebrity might also lead to a scene with papparazzi or other threats such as The Mad Russian, a shark toothed boy and an ice girl. (Let me know if you'd like to venture in that direction and I can get you more information).
Audience: This is important: I'm aiming for a boy audience (as well as girls, but hoping for boys primarily) so romance/paranormal YA covers with a loving couple on the front won't work. I'd like Miranda on the cover if possible (to avoid confusion over the title) but not overly romance-y.
Characters: There are three you could draw from, although the third is definitely optional.
Dan: He's the main character. 17 years old, blonde surfer look, although he is a pizza delivery guy. Casual clothes would work. He can generate electricity in lightning bolts. Sometimes this can be seen under his skin. Up to you how you do it. Dan could be just a normal guy.
Miranda: A pop star in the style of a Katy Perry (a bit outrageous). Hispanic or olive skin, dark hair. Often wears sunglasses. Again, I'm happy to go with an interpretation with this.
The Mad Russian: Dan's crazy grandfather. Could be a menacing figure on the back cover, maybe. Tidy grey beard but slightly crazy grey hair on his head. Wears a suit, but again that can change.
Colours: I'm open with this, although I would like something that is not too dark and forboding. There should be some colour in it.
I am looking to create three covers for the series, so the successful designer could expect another two gigs in the next few months.
Title: The Miranda Contract (I'd like that to appear on three lines The / Miranda / Contract and in a basic, strong font).
Author: Ben Langdon
Publisher Details: I've set up a publisher for this - Kalamity Press. I've attached the files for the logo which would be good to see on the back cover and a small version on the spine - if it fits your design of course. If it clashes, happy to leave it off.
Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions.
