I'm looking for an application icon for a guitar tablature editing application being built for Mac OS X. The application allows users to transcribe and compose musical scores with an emphasis on stringed instruments, and guitar in particular. The most important thing I'm looking for is that the icon looks and feels like an icon for a native OS X application. With this in mind, it's important to make note of Apple's Human Interface Guidelines: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGIcons/XHIGIcons.html The most relevant parts are those that relate to User Application Icons. In particular, the "Creating Icons" section has a lot of useful information. As mentioned in the guidelines, application icons need to come in several sizes: 512x512, 128x128, 32x32, and 16x16. The 128x128 version is the one that sits in the dock, and is therefore the most important one. Also, the two smaller icons preferably won't be just scaled down versions of the bigger icons -- they should still look crisp. What I have in mind for the icon itself is something along the lines of the Garageband icon -- just a single, detailed icon of a guitar. I've uploaded a picture of a guitar that the icon could be modeled from. I'm mostly interested in its bright, vibrant colors -- the bright blue with a white pickguard on the body and a golden maple neck. The icon shouldn't be an exact copy of the guitar; I don't want it to be identifiable as a particular brand or model of guitar. Garageband's icon has a very generic-looking guitar that can't really be identified. With all that said, I'm open to other ideas if you'd like to be creative, but I can't guarantee that I'll like them! Update: A few additional comments based on some of the entries I've been getting. The main issue that I'm seeing is the perspective and angle of the guitar. See the "Icon Perspectives and Materials" section in the interface guidelines. User application icons should be angled so that the top of the icon is set further back than the front. In other words, the bottom should be a bit bigger than the top. The shadow beneath the icon should also reflect this perspective. Also, I'd like the icon to be angled a bit to the right rather than straight up. I want the area that encloses the icon to be roughly close to a square in shape rather than an elongated vertical rectangle. You don't need to copy the Garageband icon exactly, but it's a great example of proper perspective, angle and shadow for this kind of icon. Also, please! Don't just submit resized photographs of guitars! Not only will it certainly be identifiable as an existing model of guitar, but it's entirely unoriginal and just doesn't look very good.
I've uploaded a screenshot of the work-in-progress app in case you're interested.
