verizonlabs got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
Design a family of icons for suite of open-source projects
Check out verizonlabs's Icon or button contest…
Verizon Labs infrastructure engineering group is a technology team at Verizon that focuses on datacenter and operational systems. Our goal is to make most of our work freely available via open source, providing users software that is well maintained and used at scale - software they can count on in their own systems. The intended use of these icons is to feature our projects on our own open source home page on github.com; something to give the projects their own personality and character.
What's your vision?
We are aiming to make as much of our software open source as we can, so that others may benift from its development. We would like to provide a set of icons to represent our projects (one icon per project). The projects in question are all distinct from each other, but ideally the icons would feel like a family, such that they are in the same illustration style. The projects we would like icons for are: Name: Knobs URL: https://verizon.github.io/knobs/ Description: Primarily a configuration library, Knobs gets its name from the idea that there are lots of "knobs" to turn in an application configuration. Imagine all the knobs on an audio mixing desk, or large knobs and dials on machinery... these are the kinds of images that we had in mind when we named the project. Name: Quiver URL: https://verizon.github.io/knobs/ Description: Quiver is a multi-graph modeling library. The project is called Quiver because for graphs, there are nodes and edges, and the lines between the nodes form arrows, and a in archery, a quiver is used to store arrows (tenious I know, but stay with me). Quiver is mostly used for modeling interconnected things, be it networks, or domains. Name: Delorean URL: https://github.com/Verizon/delorean Description: Delorean is a pun on the "back to the future" films, given that it converts from a datastructure called Task, to one called Future, and vice versa. Happy to have any back to the future-style icon for this :-D Name: Remotely URL: https://verizon.github.io/remotely/ Description: A fast, communication system for internal datacenter systems, Remotely provides safety and speed for RPC-style network transactions. The project is called remotely simply because one system is calling another thats remote - please take that metaphor whereever you'd like to go with it. Name: Journal URL: https://verizon.github.io/journal/ Description: a simple async logging library. Journal is named as such because of the metaphor of writing things down for to review later. Name: Blockade URL: https://github.com/Verizon/sbt-blockade Description: a tool for restricting build-time dependencies in large distributed build systems, blockade gets its name from forming blockades around certain sets of user-definable dependencies.
There are several teams out there who we think are doing a great job with their project icons already: http://airbnb.io/ (scroll down to the project list) https://lyft.github.io/envoy/ (nice logo / iconography) Please feel free to be creative with the icons and play on the project themes; we're not constrainted to a particular colour pallete, but having them illustrated would be very prefereable (that is, compared to a raster sketch or similar).

It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their icon or button.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
verizonlabs collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
