What's your vision?
Overview: The commission is for a map for an adventure/fantasy novel set in the Greek mythological universe. This has the potential to be a regular project within the series of books planned with each book having its own set of maps. Dimensions: As the book is formatted to 6” (width) by 9” (height), a map of 5” (width) by 7.5” (height) is desired. Details: See references, particularly ‘Egypt VIII’. The map is to comprise the Southern Aegean-Mediterranean Sea basin and the lands it touches namely Crete, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, and Libya. It must be in black-and-white (e.g. grayscale). The medium can be whatever you fancy (e.g. pencil, pen, or brush, hand- or digitally drawn). The map is to be a hybrid political-physical map. It must contain the following labels in terms of regions and/or islands: (a) Crete, (b) Cyprus, (c) Egypt, and (d) Cyrene. It must also contain the following locations: (1) Knossos (Cyprus), (2) Paphos and Kition (Crete), (3) Giza, Memphis, and Ammonium (Egypt), and (4) Tyros and Ugarit. In terms of geographic features, the map must depict the following: Mountains: Mount Ida in Crete, the Green Mountains of Cyrene, the Troodos and Cyrenia Mountains of Cyprus, and the Lebanese and Anti-Lebanese Mountains in Lebanon. Rivers: The Nile and its tributaries and the Jordan River. Seas: Galilee and the Dead Sea. Miscellany: Space permitted, would like to see (a) farmland along the Nile River, (b) marshlands along the Nile Delta, and (c) sand dunes in the Western Desert. Space permitted, I would like to see animals also depicted. Around the Nile Delta, a crocodile and an ibis. Along the Nile River, a hippopotamus. In the Western Desert, a scorpion, a snake, an ostrich, and foxes. Near Ammonium, a dung beetle. In Crete, bulls. In Tyros (Tyre), murex snails. In terms of lettering, no specific preference. In terms of compass rose, no specific preference. In terms of scale, English (e.g. miles, mi) in the least. I would also welcome both English and Metric (e.g. kilometers, km). In terms of border, I would like to see something Egyptian-related (e.g. hieroglyphics, ankhs, scarabs, papyrus sedges, etc.). In terms of map name, omit. References: Attached files are of the region to be illustrated. The first file, ‘Egypt VII’, is of a map I made using WonderDraft™. It emphasizes some, not all, of the geographic features and place names I want to see. The second file, ‘Ancient Egypt’, emphasizes the cities and palatial complexes in Ancient Egypt. The third file, ‘MapRev2’ is of a map whose style I wish to see replicated for this map. Other resources you might find useful in this project are Google Maps and https://maps-for-free.com. The latter allows a user to toggle on different geographical features such as water, ice, sand, forest, etc. Misc. Notes: The time period of the work is the Late Bronze Age, the Mycenaean Era of Greece and the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt in the New Kingdom Period.
