UPDATE: A lot of submissions are showing a very similar concept (girl flying to moon on bird). I would love to see some variations and different concepts. UPDATE: This contest originally included a book cover plus twelve sketches. I am changing it to JUST the book cover. BOOK TITLE: Uma Luma Goes to the Moon AUTHOR: Emmy Donovan DELIVERABLES: Artwork must be 300 dpi. or more. Artist will be credited inside book (optional). • CreateSpace paperback cover: full color, layered PSD file with text on separate layers and list of fonts used; Photoshop files should have all layers intact and unlocked, including adjustment and editable type layers. Please use template that’s provided at the bottom of this brief. Story summary and details provided below for ideas and inspiration. • Also 2 maximum-quality JPG of the cover: one with text and one without. • EPS vector files of image elements (like characters) are welcome but not required. NOTE: I will make the ebook and audiobook covers from the paperback cover. Artwork will be used for books and promotional materials.
STORY SUMMARY: Uma Luma is tired, but she can’t fall asleep. She tries reading and playing; she tries counting sheep; and she tries drinking warm milk. Nothing seems to help. Every day at school, Uma is getting more exhausted. Her class goes on a field trip to an animal rescue ranch. The next day they go to the school library. The day after that is space day. Uma Luma loves space! But she’s too tired to enjoy her space lessons. One night, Uma is trying to fall asleep and notices the full moon outside her window. Then something incredible happens—a big red mechanical bird shows up and takes Uma Luma on an adventure to the moon. Uma meets the Man in the Moon and learns all about space. But the next day, Uma’s not sure if it was all just a dream. DESCRIPTIONS FOR 3 CHARACTERS (Uma should be on the cover; other characters are optional): 1. UMA LUMA: Seven years old. She has a heart-shaped face with a few freckles scattered across her nose. Her hair was blond, but it has been turning darker lately. Her eyes are green. She’s wearing yellow pajamas with big, pink polka dots, fuzzy blue slippers and a pink cape with a lightning bolt on the back. See two sketches below — one shows an idea for Uma’s face; the other shows her pajamas. 2. GALILEO: Big red mechanical (like a toy) bird the size of a pony. His feathers are deep, dark red, and he has long black-and-white striped legs. His beak is long, pointy, and bright yellow, and his eyes are large and sparkling. He wears a purple saddle with a chair back on it. He is modeled on an egret (see image at bottom of brief). 3. THE MAN IN THE MOON: This is the face on the (full) moon that we sometimes see made from shadows on the moon. He’s a character in the story. He’s got big eyes and a pointy nose. His mouth is kind of hanging open.
