Ian M. Wilson got their new illustration or graphics by running a design contest:
Photo restoration and finishing for print book about trains

Entertainment & The Arts
I write and publish books that showcase historic pictures of trains, locomotives and railways.
What's your vision?
I need someone skilled in Photoshop to prepare 31 colour photographs for publication in a print book. This preparation will involve colour restoration, tone adjustments, sharpening and other artful improvements. These photographs are scanned from 35mm transparencies, and they are taken in the 1950s. The subjects are railways and trains, especially locomotives. By today's standards, they are not sharp images, and some colour shifting has occurred. This contest presents five unfinished pictures for you to demonstrate your talents upon! The winner will be awarded the contract to do these AND the other 26 pictures (for a total of 31 altogether). The contest photographs are already sized (300 d.p.i.) and cropped to the exact dimensions required for print layout. Please do not rotate or resample! There are TIFF files in CMYK format (please submit the finished photograph the same). I have cleaned up any specks and blemishes on the scan, but if you find any obvious ones, please remove them. I will note that the initial scans marred some detail upon very close inspection (unfortunately, I no longer have access to the originals so I cannot rescan them). As these are old pictures from small (35mm) originals, I am not expecting miracles from them! The object is to make these trains pictures “leap off the page” to the best of your ability. But please be careful with any sharpening or “beauty treatment”, as that may obliterate detail (my readers WANT to see the detail in these old locomotives and railway cars and structures). To give you an idea of what I am looking for, I have uploaded some “before-and-after” samples from a previous book project. These were images similar in quality to the five test images presented here. If things goes well with this initial contract for 31 finished pictures, I have other similar projects available for you. My books are printed on high-quality glossy paper stock, so your efforts will be properly showcased. If you have any questions or further needs, I am at your service. Many thanks in advance for your participation, and I hope we can work together!
Please note that there are some before-and-after samples (the ones with "Montreal" in the filename. Not to be confused with the contest files (the ones with "Ontario" in the filename.
