and educating all audiences about preterm birth (the leading cause of
infant morbidity and mortality). It should also be a call to action,
inspiring people to do something to make a difference.
There is a NEW preterm birth prevention strategy that combines two
risk screening strategies and progesterone treatment for high risk
o Ask a question at the first prenatal visit: “Have you had a
preterm birth in a prior pregnancy?”
-A history of spontaneous preterm birth doubles the risk of preterm
o Measure cervical length mid-pregnancy.
-A prematurely “short” cervix increases the risk of preterm birth
Used together, these two simple risk screens identify more than 50% of
pregnancies destined to deliver before 34 weeks.
