Cup & Chisel got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Cup & Chisel: the first combination coffee shop/handtool woodshop!
Check out Cup & Chisel's Logo design contest…
Honest. Personal. Handcrafted.
We are working to build what we believe is the first combination coffee shop and hand tool woodshop. The store will also sell third party and sourced handmade goods. We want to target young men and women aged 18-35. Picture walking into Cup & Chisel, buying an awesome espresso, a sandwich made with handmade-in-store French baguette, and settling into a seat in front of the huge walnut workbench to watch an artisan make traditional furniture using only gorgeous hand tools. While there, you can also browse the range of wood and leather specialty goods, sourced from independent and under-the-radar craftspeople with whom we've cultivated personal relationships. We want to grow well beyond the brick and mortar location to become a lifestyle brand! Since opening a brick and mortar is expensive, our strategy is first to build our online presence and e-store. This will hopefully allow us to bootstrap the funds to establish the physical space. This logo design is absolutely crucial for us. Since we think our concept is unique and has not been done before, it must convey succinctly to customers the marriage of coffeeshop and woodshop, with an overarching concept of "handcrafted" and "artisanal". If your design is selected, it will appear on Day 1 launch on wood and leather goods from our store!
Other color requirements
I'd like to explore the following colors: Blues (Knowledge, trust, calm and honesty.) Oranges (Creativity, adventure and happiness.) Yellows (Energy, intellect, fun and youth.)
We want that fun "retro" look that is in right now, but if you can "rough" that up a bit, that would be great. So, a balance of serious and playful, with a little more weighting to the serious. Consider the examples here: http://www.downgraf.com/inspiration/40-retro-logo-designs-inspiration/ We would like to work with a "dusty" blue and orange, and eggshell white/beige. Please use those in your design. Of course, since this is wood and coffee and tool themed, we could definitely see some brown and grey (for metal) in there as well. We really like the idea of a "badge", but regardless of the shape, we'd like a logo that incorporates: 1. cup and chisel graphics (consider one cup and two crossed chisels) 2. company name (Cup & Chisel) 3. our slogan "Honest. Personal. Handcrafted" 4. the colors listed on this description 5. "Houston, Texas" 6. some kind of background so that we can use this initially as a web landing page For fonts, we have been playing with cursive ones like Yellowtail which seem to go well with the retro theme. We like that, but in the spirit of making things a little more rough, feel free to use something a bit more sculpted. UPDATE: It turns out the submissions we like the most so far have gone "block" over cursive. It looks cleaner to us, and will probably come up better in print form. Please help us by making a logo that is very versatile. We're really excited to see the "full-featured", color model, but the final version should be easily stripped of text and colors (leaving just the cup and chisel graphics) so that it can be stamped on small wood and leather goods. So, please don't make a "typographic" logo (think the OPPOSITE of FedEx). The hope with this contest is to find someone with whom we can build a relationship, as we anticipate further needs down the line: t-shirt designs, promotional flyers, product packaging, etc. Please do not use any stock photographs, clipart, etc. We would like an all-original logo. Also, if you are using an uncommon font, please have a way of transferring that to us on final submission of the materials. We want to foster as much dialogue as possible during this contest, so please don't hesitate to drop us a line if you have questions or need more information!
