michelangelo got their new logo design by running a design contest:
CUTE logo/mascot for 'GAMES.COM' (thai) required! $150 1st prize, $25 2nd prize.
Check out michelangelo's Logo design contest…
A cute and vibrant logo aimed at the teenage market is required for "games.com" (in thai script). We are after a strong brandable logo (good idea to also contain a "mascot" or brandable character/image) that will stand by itself. Please see the longer description / brief for everything you need to know about the domain, free thai fonts (edit: new list!), etc. Please note: We've run many sitepoint comps over the years (6?), and made a point of paying promptly. What's your vision?
Desired Style: Cute, teenager, web2.0, vibrant and colorful Accepted File Formats: PSD EXECUTIVE SUMMARY We would like a logo, for use in a header, for a thai games website. http://xn--12c8d1a4fxc.com/ translates to "games.com" (in thai). You'll need to have thai language support activated (easy), and to get some thai fonts (easy) so you can just cut and paste the "4 character" thai word for "games" into photoshop. http://xn--12c8d1a4fxc.com/gamesdotcom.html shows you what the name of the website looks like, and gives you something to cut and paste into photoshop, when you have some thai fonts installed. "Games" is in thai, ".com" is in english. The logo must contain the word "games.com" (in thai), as the domain name itself (in thai) is a critical part of our strategy with this domain. It should not have "www" in it, just "games" (thai) then ".com" (english). Please do not basis colour selection on current website, which is just a free template in temporary use. Design your own colour scheme. We can shape the site scheme around the logo. If you want some inspiration for the sort of "cute" colours we are after, take a look here: game.co.th www.puppyred.com www.roiworld.com As far as the "mascot" goes, it should have a modern feel yet still be something Thais will identify with. A few ideas are: elephants, monkeys, pigs, chickens, hippos, bears, puppies, kittens, thai kid with hair in bun (as seen in "phearow" contest entry / www.learningthai.com website). UPDATE: We have thought about this now, and we think that an elephant in a muay thai outfit would be the "perfect" mascot. Thai's love elephants. But we will go with the best design in the end!!! :) Style: "Cute, teenager, web2.0, vibrant and colorful" We hope you will find this competition interesting, and a little bit "different" :) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1) What is an IDN? http://xn--12c8d1a4fxc.com/ is an IDN (International Domain Name) and translates to "games.com" in the Thai language. Currently only IE7 and Opera support IDNs out-of-the-box, and if you use them to load that URL, the messy "english" domain "xn--12c8d1a4fxc" will appear in proper thai characters. What is an IDN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalized_domain_name 2) How do I enable Thai characters? Very easy: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx#E4 3) What browser do I need for IDN? Any, but IE7 and Opera work out of the box. Firefox works but you have to change the settings as specified here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/tld-idn-policy-list.html 4) Where can I get some thai fonts? There are many unicode fonts, as well as dedicated thai fonts. Here is a list of unicode fonts containing the thai alphabet: http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Thai.html There is also a decent free pack of 65 fonts here http://www.freelang.com/download/fonts/ttf_thai_package.zip however the unicode font list above appears to contain superior quality fonts. CLARIFICATIONS AS A RESULT OF CONTEST ENTRIES AND QUESTIONS - Last updated 01-19-2007 1) The "squiggle" above the last thai character has to be there. It doesn't have to be miles away, it can sit just on top, but it does have to be there in "some form". It can be smaller than the rest. We'll post here
