Rogue Comet got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Design a Cool Logo for the "Lone Star Game Expo"

Games & Recreational
Lone Star Game Expo is a fan-based organization for tabletop hobbies. Our focus is on 1) roleplaying games like D&D, 2) miniatures games (which could be World War II tank, sci fi ship battles, or any genre), and 3) board games such as Settlers of Catan and Lords of Waterdeep. See our website at http://lonestargameexpo.com/ to get a feel for our games and events. The target audience is from ages 9 to 99 but consists of all those who love tabletop games. The audience tends to love sci fi and fantasy. We will also have some cosplay and contests for the various games and miniatures which people craft.
DESIGN ELEMENTS TAILORED TO TARGET AUDIENCE'S INTERESTS: This logo should be original and should appeal to three audiences: People who play roleplaying games (probably symbolized by a twenty-sided die or other polyhedral die) People who play board games (perhaps symbolized by a meeple or other game part or cards or a pencil) People who play miniatures games (perhaps symbolized by a tank or car or a figure of a miniature person). Six-side hex symbols play into both roleplaying and some miniatures and board games and so hexes symbols could be a good element to incorporate. THE BEST EXAMPLE: This logo is just about perfect but we don’t want to copy them too closely: http://www.midwestgamefest.org/images/logos/Midwest_GameFest_Logo_with_Icons.png REFERENCE ART: These are also great logos that similar to what we’re looking for: http://wilwheaton.net/typepad-images/6a00d8341c59aa53ef017743731a99970d-pi http://www.livingfortwayne.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/tabletopday5x5feet-logo.jpg http://retail.shuffleandcut.com/uploads/2/6/3/1/26311569/8276619_orig.jpg These logos aren’t exactly what we’re looking for but have design elements that might inspire you: https://static2.paizo.com/image/content/Logos/PFACG-Logo_500.jpeg http://www.war-boardgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/game-thrones-board-game-logo-300x176.png http://geekmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Pandemic.png http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uqJ7Ejn3Bxk/VVS64ANCmsI/AAAAAAAAERA/zc-7q9g8c98/s1600/JADE%2BLogo%2BBlog%2BAbout%2BPage.png http://www.clipartkid.com/images/44/board-game-pieces-clip-art-game-on-svg-file-board-game-ISQeIH-clipart.png http://www.ibgcafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/logo-float.png These logos have a nice ‘expo’ layout we think is cool: http://content.sportslogos.net/logos/6/980/full/hm0hxtghkv2yhfcrlc0of3iem.gif https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9f/2015_KHL_All-Star_Game_Logo.png FONT BORDER: The logo should look good on color backgrounds, white backgrounds or dark backgrounds. As such it’s probably good to have the font have a outlines around the letters with both dark and light colors. Here are two examples: http://content.sportslogos.net/logos/6/980/full/hm0hxtghkv2yhfcrlc0of3iem.gif http://geekmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Pandemic.png TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: SIZE: The logo will be used primarily on our web site and should look good when placed on various backgrounds (such as the rotating banners on our website which have color backgrounds). The logo should be vector and also look good at larger sizes since we may put it on a t-shirt or banner. FILE FORMAT: I would like vector format art and the source file for the art in of whatever tool you use so that I can use Illustrator, Inscape or similar tool resize the logo, recolor it, etc., after I get the final file. Additionally, we would like the logo output to high-resolution .PNG files with a transparent background. FONT: You can use any fonts you like but please let us know what fonts you used so we can potentially buy and use the font for related print collateral or designs. BLACK AND WHITE LINE-ART VERSION: If possible, we may try to use the logo on clear, acrylic trophies such as you see in this example: http://www.plaquemaker.com/gold-beveled-wave-acrylic-1d.jpg As such, we’d like a black and white line-art version of the logo to use in this context.
