PartnersInCulture needed a new logo design and created a contest on 99designs.
A winner was selected from 59 designs submitted by 19 freelance designers.
We need a new logo to be used for posters, flyers, ads and all other publicity for our foundation and our annual festival for improvised music. Must work in large and small formats and in black and white. Should convey adventure, music, spontaneity. The "dOeK" element of the logo needs to work separately for use on letterheads and other activities sponsored by "Stichting dOeK" (Dutch for "Foundation dOeK"). One more thing: this will be our 7th festival, so if you can cleverly include the text "#7" in the design, that's great: i.e. "dOeK Festival of Improvised Music #7". Capitalization as shown is intentional!

Stichting dOeK ("Foundation dOeK") is a collective of improvising musicians who have presented a yearly festival for improvised music since 2001. The festival is held in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam – one of the world’s best jazz clubs. It runs for two evenings with three sets of music per evening. This niche festival attracts lovers of adventurous music. A large part of our audience is made up of people out creative industries – music, dance, graphic design, etc. Up until now we have not been able to sell out the Bimhuis – the music is quite ‘difficult’ and uncompromising – but we feel this should be possible with good promotion and publicity. Posters and flyers will be displayed in Amsterdam and jazz venues elsewhere in the Netherlands. We also advertise in selected magazines and websites. Improvised music can take many forms – free jazz, using composed elements, electronics, world music – but what it has in common is that it is music of the moment – no-one knows beforehand exactly how it will sound or what direction it will take. This sense of urgency and freedom should come through in the logo.
Background on the foundation's name: dOeK comes from "de Oefening, de Kunst", literally "the Practice, the Art".
The word "doek" in Dutch also means 'canvas' or 'dishtowel'. Reference to this in our current logo (as well as info about us) can be seen online at http://www.doek.org. Music instruments involved are mostly: saxofone, double bass, and percussion. Not vocal music.
clean, clear design, good lettering, a limited colour palette
fussy design, cliched jazz references.
