PlaceLab is a new desktop software application that extracts and processes data from an organisation's databases, spreadsheets and other sources and generates map layer files for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS) or web map application (such as Google Maps). The map layers will mostly represent properties, roads and local government assets.
The logo will feature in marketing material (brochures, posters), product website, and as a simple graphic on the application itself.
I hope the logo can strike a balance between being simple and at the same time providing a vision and getting potential users excited about turning their boring data into visually appealing and useful map layers.
One idea I have for a logo is a sheet of paper that looks like a spreadsheet at the top, but which merges gradually into a map towards the bottom of the sheet. The sheet is not necessarily flat, but can have some 3D form to it, such as curled, floating, etc. I'm also open to other ideas.
* the design may have the word 'PlaceLab' next to it, under it, etc, but the logo should also look good by itself without the word 'PlaceLab'
* avoid globes and Google Map pin icons
* convey simplicity
* the design or colours should not conflict with those of the Groundtruth website
