Stratosphere-troposphere Processes and their Role in Climate
REVISED DESIGN BRIEF (5 June 2013) - in addition to technical requirements mentioned below: • SPARC research is about atmospheric layers (the stratosphere 15-50 km and the troposphere 0-15 km altitude); these layers can be illustrated like the layers of an onion, not like rings which look like orbits or planetary rings, this gives a wrong impression; • 'SPARC' should be very prominent compared to 'WCRP'; • the prominence of 'stratosphere-troposphere' compared to 'processes and their role in climate' is nice; • we seek a new logo because we add research on 'troposphere' to our portfolio; it is therefore inappropriate to highlight 'stratosphere' (or the 'S' letter) specifically over 'troposphere'. ___________________________________________ Background: SPARC is one of the four international scientific research projects of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). SPARC coordinates research related to the processes in the stratosphere (that region of the atmosphere between 15 and 50 km altitude) that affect the climate of the stratosphere and the climate of the troposphere below (0 to 15 km altitude). The acronym SPARC stands for: Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate. This WCRP-supported programme gathers the most renowned scientists from around the world to discuss what data, research and experiments are needed to better understand chemistry and dynamics (i.e. mixing, circulation etc.) in the stratosphere and their interactions with the troposphere; this knowledge ultimately helps to improve climate models and is used in high-level assessments such as those prepared by the United Nations on ozone or the state of climate (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports). Find more information on SPARC at http://www.sparc-climate.org/, in particular about its scientific foci at http://www.sparc-climate.org/about/themes/. Motivation for a new logo: The SPARC programme recently changed its mandate to focus not only on the stratosphere but to also focus on those aspects of tropospheric climate that are affected by, or connected to, the stratosphere. After consultation with the wider SPARC community (some 3000 scientists) the overwhelming majority agreed to keep the acronym “SPARC”, but change its meaning to “Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate”. In order to depict the projects new, extended mandate and to demonstrate that SPARC is making a serious effort to fulfil this mandate, the decision was made to create a new logo. The current logo has served SPARC’s identity for more than 20 years. Target audience: The wider SPARC community counts some 3000 scientists from across the world, including senior experts as well as PhD/Postdoctoral level researchers. The new logo should be unique, recognizable and attractive to members of all cultural and scientific backgrounds. Technical requirements: It is compulsory that the logo: • contains the acronyms “SPARC” and “WCRP”, and, if room available: “Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate” or “WCRP core project” • is scalable to a minimum of 4 cm • works on white as well as on dark and colored backgrounds • is rich in contrast in order to work in presentations and other projections • is unique and recognizable, crisp (does not contain any unnecessary graphical elements), clean and modern. • communicate some of the key characteristics of SPARC Recommendations from the community: A community consultation took place to develop the criteria for this brief. Only a handful of researchers participated in the blog dedicated to the creation of a new logo. For your information please find the full blog at http://blogs.ethz.ch/sparc_namechange/sparc_newlogo/, some points are summarized below. • the new logo will benefit from a subtitle, i.e. the full name spelled out for SPARC = stratosphere-troposphere processes and their role in climate; • the logo needs to carry a message; a minimal number of graphical elements but still conveying the message we want to convey. Always ask ‘is this graphical element strictly necessary?’ • As few words as possible – the words are in the acronym/name, not on the logo
Please read the background document and output from the blog discussion conducted within our community incl. logo proposals (attached). The requested logo is for a rather conservative community of researchers which to some extend loves its current logo but it definitely needs a more contemporary finish :)
