We're looking for a logo for our 100-year-old summer camp's centennial celebration. Our target audience is camp alumnae so the logo needs to feel personalized and give a 100-year-old-camp kind of feel.
About Skyland Camp for Girls
Skyland Camp for Girls is a classic overnight summer camp that has inspired girls to be curious, creative, confident, and connected to each other and to the world since 1917. We inspire, empower, build community, play, explore, and help girls discover their authentic selves.
Our camp was founded in 1917 by a resourceful and entrepreneurial woman and was one of the first summer camps in the Southeast US. When she learned that the property (formerly a hotel and its grounds) was on the auction block, she decided to capitalize on the opportunity. Still years before she could legally vote in the United States, Granny Harris marched on to the front porch, stood behind the auctioneer and boldly called out the winning bid: “I’ll give you three thousand dollars for the whole kit and caboodle!”
Still owned and operated by the women of the same family, Skyland’s rich history has a vital influence on the camp experience. The 120-year-old hotel has been preserved and is the hub of camp, stories of past campers and staff are shared and learned eagerly, and families send third- and fourth-generation campers to camp summer after summer. Our community is small and we provide a very intimate and personalized experience. Everyone knows and supports one another.
About the Event (for which this logo is being created)
The purpose of the Centennial Celebration is to reunite the Skyland community, honor our collective history, and to build support that sets Skyland up for success in its next century. The event is a weekend-long celebration that takes place at camp for current and former campers and staff and their families. They weekend will be like a retreat back to their childhoods with horseback riding, archery, watermelon spitting contest, singing camp songs, making s'mores, etc. We will also be hosting an auction to raise money for scholarships for campers with financial need. The auction event will pay tribute to the original auction at which Granny Harris originally purchased the Big House.
