Seven Turtles Assistive Technologies
Our goal is to help people with disabilities achieve a higher level of independence in ways that enhance their quality of life. The Seven Turtles name is important to us for a few reasons. There were 5 children in the family I grew up in, with two parents that makes seven. My wife and I have five children as well, so seven again. Whenever my Dad had all us kids loaded into the car to head off on some family trip he would say as we pulled out of our driveway "And we're off, like a herd of turtles." This is a custom that I have continued. There are seven continents, so the number seven encompasses the world. Also in old maritime lore, actually dating back beyond early Roman history, there are may references to the "seven seas". One other reason for "Seven Turtles Assistive Technologies" is the acronym S.T.A.T. is a common medical abbreviation that means "now" or "rush". In some cases our target clients have shortened life expectancies, which means a week to them could be like a year to someone else. They have no time to wait, or waste.
We will be dealing mostly with Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs). The first group of end clients we are gearing up to help are folks with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Ultimately we hope to help a much larger group, including people with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Multiple Sclerosis as well as people with spinal cord injuries.
The first technology we are introducing is an eye tracking system tied to a speech generating computer. The client's eye movements are followed by a camera, or two cameras depending on the system. This eye movement is used instead of the mouse, keyboard or touchscreen to control the computer. The user can then "drive" the computer using only their eyes. They can then do all the things anyone can do on a computer, make Skype calls, write and read emails, browse the internet, or interface with communication enhancement software tied to a speech generator.
My aim is to get a company logo and any other related files, graphics and templates that can be used on company literature, the website as well as business cards and company logo shirts or giveaways. It should evoke feelings of family, global community, compassion, all combined with a sense of urgency. Certainly we think there should be turtles involved. With all this said it should be simple and minimalist, not too cartoonish. We want to be professional, we want to be remembered and we want to be of service. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
