mfabiani got their new magazine cover by running a design contest:
COVER ILLUSTRATION FOR SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY

We would like to obtain a new design for the cover of the journal Psychophysiology (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1469-8986). The journal publishes scientific papers using brain and peripheral physiological measures. Typically, studies published in Psychophysiology include psychological independent variables (i.e., experimental manipulations to test effects) and noninvasive physiological dependent variables (hemodynamic, optical, and electromagnetic brain imaging and/or peripheral measures such as respiratory sinus arrhythmia, electromyography, pupillography, and many others). The cover of the journal should symbolize that. Readers of the journal are scientist interested in brain and body physiology, and are distributed all over the world
What's your vision?
The journal paper banner (see attached file "banner") was recently redesigned to include the new logo of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR). The banner is the header of each paper published in the journal. The current journal cover looks as follows (see attached file "current cover"). For the new cover, we are looking for the following style and design changes: (1) The table of contents, which is currently displayed on the cover page, will be moved to an inside page, so the new cover image should be centered on the cover page and will not include the table of contents. (2) The journal is now published on-line only (no longer printed) so the cover design should be clear and stunning enough to also serve as an icon (see image above for the typical size of 101 x 131 pixels displayed on the journal web page). (3) The background should be one color (probably black or white or one of the blues in the banner and logo palette, but we are open to alternatives). If needed, the hex codes of the brain tree logo blues are as follows: a. Light Blue (used on top of tree "leaves"/brain and lettering): 138cc1 b. Medium Blue (used on bottom of tree "leaves"/brain and trunk): 095791 c. Dark Blue (used in middle of tree "leaves"/brain): 24326e For the cover image we are currently using an image that can be seen in more detail in this black and white rendition - see "cover image detail" file, attached. We would like the new image to be inspired by the current one but with the following changes: (1) The image should be suitable for centering on the page (2) The man should be a bit more stylized/gender neutral (3) The brain should be more prominent compared to the rest of the body/torso. Using a profile view of the head that clearly shows one hemisphere of the brain should help. (4) Brain activity should be displayed in color in the brain. Something similar to this may work (see fMRI images on the web - see sample brain image file, attached) (5) The human image should not go below the torso. It may be good to emphasize the heart (as the journal publishes electrocardiography papers), the sweat glands in the hands (as the journal publishes electrodermal papers) and the eye/pupil (as we also publish pupillary response papers) (6) The waveforms that currently overlay the man’s image should instead be part of the background to render the image less cluttered, and should include traces for EEG, EKG, EMG, and possibly ERPs and electrodermal waveforms. Here are some example traces taken from web (see attache EEG EMG EKG traces file, attached)
Please look at current cover on line or articles in the journal (see URL in the intro section). You can also refer to the SPR web page for further inspiration. https://www.sprweb.org/
