richcrane got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create mobile fitness app based on the popular Deck of Cards Workout
Check out richcrane's App design contest…
We want to create a mobile application for iOS and Android based on the Deck of Cards Workout application.
It needs to be fun and colorful, but functional. Any design that can incorporate a fitness app with professional look-n-feel is of interest. Like I said, it needs to be fun, but the idea is to incorporate gamification and competitiveness.
Deck of Cards Workout
Assumptions: - Design for mobile formats (i.e. iOS and Android) - Assets provided in Adobe Illustrator format - Where asked, also provide a PNG format in addition to the Adobe Illustrator format *** Screen #1 - Configuring a workout *** A user assign exercises such as situps, pushups, squats, jumping jacks, supermans, mountain climbers, etc. to Suits (Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs), Aces, and Jokers. What is needed to presented to the user? - Each suit (ex. Hearts, Diamonds, etc.), Aces, and Jokers - Exercises (ex. Supermans, Mountain Climbers, etc.) - Only one exercise can be assign to a suit. - You need a way to pick an exercise and associate it with a suit, ace, or joker - Once all suits, aces, jokers are configured you can start a workout Start workout will shuffle the deck of cards and should display the deck to the user on the next screen. *** Screen #2 - Workout Screen *** You perform a workout by taking a deck of cards, shuffling them, and then flipping over a card one at a time. On this screen, users will be presented with the deck of cards face down. They start the workout by flipping over the first card. For each card, you perform the exercise associated with the suit on that card. The number of repetitions is based on the value on the card. 2-10 are just that, Ace is either 1 or 11, and all face cards are 10. Ex. Situps are assigned to Clubs, if you flip over a 5 of Clubs, you perform 5 situps. You are automatically timed for each exercise. When you flip over the card, the exercise timer resets. It increases until you flip over the next card. At that point, we record the time for the previous exercise. This screen should have the following: 1) Show the current exercise NOTE: in real life this is done by flipping over a card off the top of the deck and placing the card face up 2) Show how much time has elapsed 3) Provide a way to move to the next exercise NOTE: In real life this is done by flipping over the next card. 4) An ability to stop the workout 5) An ability to pause the workout Assets Expected - 54 cards, 13 per suit, plus two jokers Standard suits of hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades - Suits should be black and red (ex. heart is red), but not required - Adding more color is always fun, be creative - One graphic per exercise (10 Exercises To Start) Pushups Supermans Mountain Climbers Planks Lunges Situps Squats Tricep Dips Run Oblique Twist - Each of these graphics (cards and exercises) should also be provided in PNG format in a high resolution format appropriate for today's phones *** For selection of the finalist *** Please provide as many of the following cards for comparison during the selection process. 8 of Hearts Ace of Spaces Jack of Diamonds Joker (Red) 10 Diamonds 10 Clubs 10 Spades 10 Hearts Run Exercise Situps The finalist will need to provide all assets expected which are all 54 cards (suits, jokers, aces) plus 10 exercise cards listed above.
What to avoid
This is a mobile application. Think of your user interface. Dropdowns are not a great for mobile applications. So watch that. I have seen buttons next to the stack of cards. No need for a button. You can tap the card with the expectation that the card would be taken off the deck and the next card flipped over. When someone is working out, they do not want to spend a ton of time thinking about the user interface of the app. They want to quickly move onto the next exercise.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. App design starts at £469.
