Art & Design
We are a new company that will be selling liquid chalk markers to a variety of audiences. Mostly these will be to crafters, home-makers, artists and shop/cafe owners. Liquid chalk markers create a much deeper, richer looking line, unlike conventional chalk which is more, well, chalky. Part of the promise of liquid chalk, too, is that it can be wiped off of any non-porous surface with simply a wet paper towel. (It will not completely remove from a porous surface--leave a ghostly image of whatever was written).
What's your vision?
Background Our first product is a set of four white liquid chalk markers, each with a 4.5mm nib (the tip with which you draw). To get a sense for the kinds of things these are used for, take a quick look at this small Pinterest board: http://www.pinterest.com/chalkmagic/liquid-chalk-projects/ The markers will be offered in a clear, plastic package (see photo) so as to show the caps of the markers (which shows their colors). We don't yet have any company branding, so we're going to start with this product’s packaging and that may also be a launching point for other branding collateral (mainly we want to get a first product out and selling and then we'll work through additional branding steps if necessary). We'll release this set of white markers first (seems to have pretty high demand--liquid chalk markers are not particularly high capacity or anything so having many of the same one is perfect for stores, cafes, etc. who are writing with them and wouldn't want to run out because they bought a set with many colors of which white is just one, right while they're wrapping up that white menu on the wall or something). Chalk Magic is a name our audience picked out of several others in a survey.. Design There are three components to this product packaging design: Labels applied to markers (hereafter referred to as "marker labels"). Dimensions: 9.2 x 5.2cm Label insert for packaging ("package label"). Dimensions: (see below) Card on which "thank you" and other information will be printed. ("info card") Dimensions: minimum of 9cm x 5 cm but can vary as long as it doesn’t exceed box dimensions (14.2 x 7.3 x 2.2 cm) We are not, at this point, tied to any particular look or feel so feel free to be creative here. However, we are big fans of clean, simple design as a general rule where possible. One of our soon-to-be competitors (Superchalks--you can find them on Amazon--http://amzn.to/1xiNQSe ) has a completely black and white look for their labeling. If we were going to go down that road color-wise, it would have to look very different than what they have. The idea of "magic" can potentially get a bit hokey for lack of a better description, which we’d want to avoid. We'd like it to communicate "fun" but not come across as all "rainbows and unicorns" since the audience is restaurant/cafe owners doing menus, homemakers labeling things in their kitchens and so on. So “creative professionals” might sum that up as an audience fairly well. But we do expect quite a bit of the home, do-it-yourself craft crowd as customers too so we don’t want to look boring and corporate either. :) The caps of the markers show their color (and we are starting with white markers for this first product as previously noted). It's very likely we'll move to colored markers in the next product so the labeling would ideally be extendable/easily adjusted for color packaging if possible. Words that should be included for each element in the packaging (not including words inside brackets below) are: [Marker Label] Chalk Magic [this is the brand name and is the "star of the show", so to speak] Liquid Chalk Marker [should take more of a supporting role but should be pretty visible] White 4mm Bullet Tip [vs. a “chisel” tip--see example in abovementioned Pinterest board if curious] Non-toxic Additional words that are commonly associated with similar product brands, in order of frequency: Bold Brilliant Easy Perfect Kick-ass!! [just kidding] Feel free to work any of those in where you can. Instructions: Shake marker for 30 seconds before first use. Then gently press tip down on a piece of paper repeatedly until chalk ink appears. Apply to non-porous surfaces like glass, plastic, metal, and more. Enjoy! Warning: Avoid use on porous surfaces! May stain regular chalk boards.. [people make this mistake a lot with these markers so this is an important warning...] Note: On these next two, we’re open to some creativity as long as the basic concepts are communicated (and obviously the URL has to stay the same since it points to an actual location--or will soon). So if you your muse is onto something with these next two elements, have at it. [Package label.] There are two possible approaches to this: First, this could be printed on card stock and when laid flat would be approximately 6.9cm wide x 9.5cm tall. We could use both sides of this, with the front for the main branding and bar code and the back for instructions and other information (more on that below). Of course, you wouldn’t be able to see the back in this approach because the markers will be covering them. This would also leave the back of the package blank (see-through since packaging is clear) so you’d just see the markers. Or...maybe it makes sense to do a longer label (like 21cm) and fold it so that, when inserted in the box, it covers the front and back of the clear packaging (which means all printing would be on one side). We could fit much more on there, which is probably better given the fact that we have a special Amazon SKU barcode to print on the label too (actual barcode to come soon--sizing information below). We’re open to both design approaches but favoring the second, longer package label. Note again that this is inserted into the clear, plastic, rectangular package which, once assembled, will be 14.2 x 7.3 x 2.2 cm. (See image showing a sample.) Copy and other items featured on the package label are: 4 Liquid Chalk Markers White 4mm Bullet Tip [vs. a “chisel” tip--see example in abovementioned Pinterest board if curious] Non-toxic Amazon SKU barcode (aka: “FNSKU”) - should be on the back, probably bottom portion of the rear of the package label.. Height by width dimension, meanwhile, should be between 1" x 2" and 2" x 3". (should have actual label in the next day or two). There are specific design requirements Our company name is Ascend Home Products, LLC. That can be shown somewhere on the package labeling, but should lower profile than the rest of the branding elements. Almost in the fine print. Just want customer to know there’s a company behind the product. It’s not what people will be searching for to find the product so is not nearly as important as “Chalk Magic”. [Info card] [Side 1] Free ebook with this purchase [meant to be a kind of attention getting header...want them to see this clearly...punch it up a bit more than the rest of the text] Thank you for choosing Chalk Magic Liquid Chalk Markers! Visit www.chalk-markers.com/ebook/ to download your free ebook. Enjoy! -[Hans’ signature] Hans Chalk Magic PS: Your purchase is protected by our 60 day warranty. Contact us at email@example.com. [Note re paper stock: I have to tell a printer in China what weight of paper to use so if you have a suggestion that would be helpful since this is not my area of expertise and I don’t to leave it to chance. I think it should be the thickness of a business card at least.] [Side 2] Instructions: 1. Shake marker for about 30 seconds before first use. 2. Then gently press tip down on a piece of paper repeatedly until chalk ink appears. 3. Create your magic! IMPORTANT: For use on non-porous surfaces only (like glass, plastic). Test first on small area if you’re not sure it will wipe off completely. --- I think that about covers it.
