I used to have a roller skate e-commerce store online at: SkatesEmporium.com. About 18 months ago I switched it to a WordPress blog and dropped the retail. It just wasn't speaking to me and I wasn't enjoying selling every product (because many of them are crap). I wanted to sell only what was good, not everything under the sun and that's when I realized that doing straight up retail just wasn't for me. It didn't feel personal enough, so I changed the brand and that is why I am here.
You can take a look at the 8-10 articles I have on that site to get an understanding of what I will be discussing with my audience. It is pretty barebones right now, but it does get about 5000 visitors a month. Not too bad and something to start from.
Once this logo is complete, I will be revamping the site to point to RollerSkateDad.com. Podcast also will be going on iTunes before the end of 2018.
I want this logo to be fun, creative and yet be a brand that is trustworthy. My aim is to get as many people back roller skating as possible. There is not a lot of unbiased, non-retail roller skating advice out there, so I aim to be that voice. A voice that people can trust.
I like the color teal and I know ruby red goes pretty good with that (along with tan and black), but I am not married to any color scheme. I do think that since it is about roller skating, the logo needs to be fun, energetic (like me) yet bring trust.
I am thinking it will likely have some fun font with some kind of roller skate or wheel or something like that. This is a podcast and a blog, too, so maybe a speaker / wheel combo? Not sure and I'm open to your thoughts.
Also, I used to be a DJ, so playing music into it is an option, too. I plan to play a lot of old skating music in my podcast.
I went ahead and picked the logo + social media pack because I also need YouTube, Twitter and Facebook designs.
I will also need to work with the winning designer on creating my iTunes podcast artwork soon after, and if you also design websites, my custom WordPress blog template. So, there will be quite a bit of extra business for the winning designer.
I am simply using this contest as a way to find someone good that I'd like to work with for the future of my brand. I plan to write and produce a ton of content for this industry in the next year, and I want a solid designer to work with for artwork and info graphics for my blog.
Thank you! I'm super excited to see what you come up with! Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Hi Everyone. I got a couple of emails from a couple of people and I wanted to include a little more direction - just in case this will help any of you. And always reach out if you have any questions. I am here and will do my best to answer you quickly.
Is this a logo for a website or a podcast?
This is a logo for a new website. I have an existing website at http://www.skatesemporium.com that I will be rebranding to RollerSkateDad.com once this logo is completed. I am also starting a podcast called The Roller Skate Dad podcast. I will work with the winning designer here to help me put the artwork together for the podcast after this logo contest is completed. I also have a website to redesign, so I will need some artwork for the site besides just the logo, too.
What elements are you open to in the logo design? A roller skate, a person roller skating, musical references, a picture of you?
I am open to your interpretation of what you think Roller Skate Dad should look like from a logo perspective. I think things like these might be a good reference for a logo: a quad roller skate/rollerblade; a person skating; music notes/vinyl records/a mixer/a microphone (I used to be a DJ in a roller rink); a caricature of me (https://bit.ly/2Ta4GnV); kids skating; a retro 70s/80s look are all things I am interested in but if you have a different take or spin on the idea, go with it.
Also, I was a competitive artistic roller skater as a kid (I was a junior olympic national champion in freestyle skating in the 90s), so you can always play off that idea, too. Here is a video (https://bit.ly/2B3GU64) of someone else doing artistic roller skating. It is not me in this video - they didn't have video cameras when I roller skated competitively (joking). It's very much like Olympic ice skating that everyone here should be familiar with just on roller skates.
Note: Above all, though, this is a business and it does need to look professional. I do plan to make money with this website. I plan to use my lifetime of experience to help others make the right decisions on finding the right skating equipment for themselves and their kids, so a logo that conveys trust matters. I also plan to help people with tips & techniques on learning how to do the different types of skating - artistic skating, roller derby, speed skating, jam skating, etc.
With that said, it is a brand new website and podcast, so I'm pretty open to ideas right now. I did decline a couple of designs already from designers that I didn't like - they looked almost like clip art and were not polished or professional enough for my tastes. Again, it needs to be fun but also professional.
Thanks again to everyone entering the contest. Reach out if you have any questions.
