subtlesword got their new t-shirt by running a design contest:

This design is for a martial arts themed clothing line. MMA/BJJ/Muay Thai branded wear. It is intended for those who practice or are fans of MMA and other martial arts. So there should be quite a sporty feel to the garment. However I very much want the design to have a retro, 1970's feel, like movie posters for old 1970's kung fu films, or retro 1970's Japanese samurai films. In terms of aesthetic, a mix of these two qualities would be ideal. Sporty/retro 1970's kung fu/samurai I may on some garments use a small chest logo, in black/white/red that will have a very clean Japanese samurai feel. But this is optional and only for some garments. But in terms of the larger overall design, I would really emphasize the 1970's retro martial arts feel in both design and colour scheme. So I'm open to the colours being quite bright and garish. I will include a few sample images for reference. I imagine the design having 3 main elements. First, a large central chest piece, featuring a design that could belong on a 1970's martial arts film poster. (If it could feature a 1970's style samurai that would be amazing). Second, the words 'SAMURAI 75' written down one sleeve in Japanese themed lettering. Thirdly, a smaller simplified design more like a logo on the upper back between the shoulder blades, something very samurai themed that also says SAMURAI 75.
The brand name SAMURAI 75 should be featured somewhere in the overall design. The central chest design should feature a cool graphic novel style 1970's samurai character in an action pose. This main character can have historical elements but also more modern elements. For example, a top knot traditional hairstyle but sunglasses....or a more traditional samurai but in a funky 1970's tracksuit. Feel free to be experimental. I would also be open to a more Manga style samurai. The design will likely be used on black/white, coloured t shirts, so a colour scheme that is quite flexible to background would be ideal. But mainly it will be either black/white background. The background design can draw on old kung fu film elements so can be quite colourful. Although I want it to look retro and fashionable, it is ultimately a sporty brand that will be marketed towards fans of mma/bjj/muay thai, so an underlying feel of athletic wear should be maintained.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. T-shirt starts at £159.
