Astanenbaum got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Help electoral-vote.com with a new website design

Provides political polls as a map and has other political news of U.S. presidential and senate election. Audience is political junkies from both parties from all over the U.S.
I want to give www.electoral-vote.com a new look. I know that over 70% of the visitors have screens 1280 or more pixels wide, so I want the new design to be 1200 pixels wide (to leave room for browser borders and scollbars). The current design is 960 wide, meaning there will be room to move things around. The main page has a top part and a bottom part. The top part has the following elements - The date, which must be conspicuous - A banner ad 600 x 60 pixels - Two box scores - The map, which is 580 x 359 and computer generated - The four links in the upper right - The map legend - The list of new polls - The Dem & GOP pickups - The 3 little icons in the corner - The menu items with icons - The Political Wire logo and headlines All of these are needed in one form or another, but the sizes, colors, placements, etc. could be different. The yellow background color has to go. Since the page is now wider, it should be possible to reduce the height of this part, which, all things considered, is a slight plus, but not the key factor. The bottom part begins with News from the Votemaster. That part needs to support a 180-pixel column of ads on the right. Probably a larger font would be better. When making a design, put in some sample headlines and text from the website, but it doesn’t matter so much what you put there. The bottom of the page has previous headlines, a search box, and the sitemeter icon. In addition to the main page, there is a senate page that has the same top part but no bottom part. Finally, there are dozens of other pages that need to share the same style sheet as the main page. In the attachment, you will find some useful files The winning designer will be credited on the acknowledgments page along with a link to his or her business page. In Oct. 2008, this site was receiving 500,000 to 1 million hits a day. That link might bring in some traffic.
There will be no content management system used. The pages other than the main one have a great deal of content generate daily by other software, which builds the pages
